Ft. Lauderdale Deep Sea Fishing Reports
Ft Lauderdale Offshore Fishing Report- May 2009
Offshore fishing has been very
productive for the month of May. The best dolphin fishing has been
consistently in the areas of 750 to1100 feet of
water. Numerous fish in the 20# range and many into the 30# plus class along
with the usual schoolies have been taken here towards the end of the month.
Occasionally these fish are found closer to shore but it is typically better
in those deeper depths. This is also the time for these fish to be seen even
further out in the deep as we get into the summer offshore trends. This is a
great time to encounter the Dorado while doing a daytime Swordfish trip. And
the Swordies are there.
Closer to shore the Kingfish have been quite plentiful
and very easy on most days to catch your limit. Some really nice sized Kings
are on the reefs now. Don't hesitate to look inside of 70' of water if you
have trouble locating a school. Good sized Blackfin Tunas are on many days
just outside of the reefline. Hard to beat a frisky live bait for the
biggest ones. Smaller ones can be taken with some regularity by trolling
with small lures and light leaders.
Shallow water wrecks are holding keeper sized Mutton
Snapper and mostly smaller Amberjacks.
Lots of Sardines moving through the area are a strong
argument for the success of our
Fort Lauderdale
charter fishing trips this month. Virtually every species we catch on or
near the reefs has a stomach full of these little guys.
Shark Fishing has been strong and Hammerheads are still
being caught but as we get into June, the Sharks will begin to retreat from
the deeper depths moving north. For Shark fishing, we will soon be fishing
shallow waters in close to the schools of Kingfish and Bonito for our
resident predators. As always, almost all Sharks caught on the Marlin My
Darlin are released alive to protect our ever declining Shark Fisheries.
Tight lines and good fishing
