Ft. Lauderdale Deep Sea Fishing Reports
Ft Lauderdale Offshore Fishing Report- May 2010
Ft.
Lauderdale fishing changes
big time each year in May. We put away our kites for the most part and begin
rigging trolling baits. As the water warms from the more abundant sunshine,
certain fish leave our area while others take their place. The sharks will
be the last to leave our area in numbers and with the unusually cool winter
we had, this could take a few extra weeks. It’s not unusual to catch these
into June but the big Hammerheads should be gone by months end. Not to say
we still won’t encounter one or two from time to time, but their numbers
will decrease significantly.
Another winter visitor will also be
leaving, the Amberjacks that give such a tough fight and live on the deeper
wrecks and reefs. Again, some will stay and can be caught but the numbers
will decline and catching one will become the exception and not the rule.
While we catch Sailfish all year long,
we have had a lull in these fish until recently. They are already beginning
their migration north and will be encountered more frequently in the next
few months. While mostly hooked fishing live bait in the kites in the cooler
months, it will take a properly rigged swimming bait to attract their
attention now. They will be seen from the reef in shallow waters out to
where we will be fishing soon for the Mahi-mahi and Wahoo in the deeper
waters further from shore.
Kingfish will also become a daily “go
to” fish as their number increase tremendously and the Bonito we have been
catching will become much more frequent. So much so the question will be
posed from our customers… “Can we go for something else”? My how I do love
that question…
J
Warmer waters, calmer seas, trolling and pulling our rigged baits to attract
the fish. It’s a great time of year to be fishing here. You just never know
what will pop up…
