Ft Lauderdale Offshore Fishing Report- November 2008

November begins our change in tactics to catch fish as our weather in Fort Lauderdale turns cooler. As the temperatures drop (lows in the 60’s) and the winds come from the north, migrating fish begin moving south through our area in search of the baitfish that have come through in the past few months. This leads to some exciting fishing that we have already experienced this month as the first two fronts have pushed through our area. Salifish

Sailfish have made their presence known in numbers already and have become a targeted species. Conservation efforts of releasing these game fish have improved fishing for them. Their numbers have increased as has their size the last few years and as each front pushes through, we expect to see more and more of these prized fighters. Sailfish truly lend to the name “Sport Fishing”.

Another fish has also entered the Arena as of late, the elusive Mahi-mahi (Dolphin). While they have been mostly absent this summer from our off shore travels,Dolphin they are making an appearance now in closer to shore. Ranging in size from good sized schoolies (5 to 8 lbs.) to the adult fish weighing in the 20, 30lbs. and higher, these fish are a blast to catch and keeping a few to eat is always a treat.

Kingfish on the reef has slowed but is still consistent. Our summer Bonito are almost completely gone and will remain so until late next spring, but some small Tuna have taken their place, the bigger fish will be close behind.

Small reef sharks have begun moving through our area and are being seen on a more regular basis. Very strong fighters for their size and impressive to watch feed, these fish put our lighter tackle and your skill and luck to a test. Their bigger brothers will be coming in numbers soon. You can forget the light tackle when they appear!

November brings a change for us here and we look forward to it each year. We expect this trend to continue for the next few months as more and more fish migrate off our coast just a few miles from shore.

Have a happy and healthy Thanksgiving.
