Ft. Lauderdale Deep Sea Fishing Reports
Ft Lauderdale Offshore Fishing Report- October 2009
October is the month here in South Florida
when our summer tactics begin to blend in with fall and winter approaches in
regards to our Fort Lauderdale Charter fishing areas. Expect to see large
schools of bait as they begin to move thru our area. Threadfin Herring,
Pilchards, Spanish Sardines and Cigar Minnows will all be coming
South
for the winter. Many of these schools of "bait" will be the focus of
attention for our game fish.
Kingfish and Bonito are the most common. Expect to encounter Dolphinfish
(the "new" title for Mai-Mai/Dorado).
Mostly smaller Sharks and occasional Sailfish will also aggressively be on
these baitfish. Trolling will yield some good catches of Kingfish
(Mackerel), occasional Sailfish, Tunas an Bonito. Sharks will be around
but not yet in large numbers. The best areas for them will be the inshore
reefs.
When the wind blows we will be live baiting (kites) with the hopes of
Sailfish bites. We will also live bait around the schools of bait mentioned
previously and try to match the hatch in regards to bait choice. A favorite
approach of ours this time of year is to live bait with Ballyhoo. We drag
these behind the boat from our outriggers and flat lines and they give us
the mobility to cover more water as opposed to a kite fishing approach.
